Game Night

A gathering, recurring or one-off, built specifically around playing games together instead of just being nearby each other.

Detailed definition

Game night can mean a standing Thursday with the same four people and the same shelf of favorites, or it can mean one specific evening you’re pulling together for a birthday, a visiting relative, or just because everyone’s schedules finally lined up. Either way, the game is the point of the gathering, not background noise to it — which is different from having games around in case anyone gets bored.

Picking the right title matters more than people expect. A group that’s never played together does better with a gateway game than with someone’s favorite four-hour euro, and a returning group might want exactly that four-hour euro because they’ve been looking forward to it all week. Tell us who’s coming and we’ll help you match the night to the game instead of the other way around.

Planning one and need a game to build it around?
