THE GAME SHELF · strategy

Catan

Welcome to Catan, where everyone desperately needs the resources you have and nobody wants to admit it. Trade, build, expand, block the routes your neighbors need, and race to ten points. Our copy includes Cities & Knights in the same box, so ask about renting the expansion too if your group wants to take Catan up a notch.

WHY RENT THIS ONE

Why it's worth a spot on your weekend

“You came for a family game. You stayed for the sheep.”

Welcome to Catan, where the sheep are plentiful, the brick is never where you need it, and your family members suddenly become very serious negotiators.

Catan is a fantastic next step for families who have outgrown simple roll-and-move games and want something with more strategy, trading, and player interaction. You build roads and settlements, trade resources, expand across the island, and try to reach ten points before everyone else. Every game creates its own little story, which is part of why people keep coming back.

Our copy includes Cities & Knights in the same box, so you can keep things classic with regular Catan or ask about adding the expansion for a longer, deeper game night. Either way, prepare for someone to insist they are absolutely not getting enough sheep.

Good to know

  • Table space

Needs a decent-sized table — a coffee table will not do it.

  • Reading load

Some reading, but not enough to slow the game down.

  • Getting knocked out

Nobody gets knocked out. Everyone plays to the last turn.

  • Pausing mid-game

Easy to pause. If someone has to step out, the table survives.

  • Setup time

About 15 minutes of setup before anyone touches a piece.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Renting, answered

Can I rent Catan near Plattekill?

Yes — Catan is part of the Deep Space Family Games game shelf, available to rent by the night around Plattekill and the wider Hudson Valley area. Roughly 30 minutes out from Plattekill in every direction — delivery and local pickup only. Nothing to walk into.

Is requesting Catan a real reservation?

No — every button on this page is a request, not a booking. Deep Space Family Games doesn't run live availability, so we confirm by hand once you tell us you want Catan and when.

What happens if a piece from Catan goes missing?

Catan, like every game on the shelf, is counted against a written list before it goes out and again when it comes back, so a missing piece is a conversation with a number behind it, not a guess.
