Why it's worth a spot on your weekend

“One board. 84 pieces. Absolutely no room for your opponent's nonsense.”

It starts out looking very peaceful. Colorful pieces, nice open board, everyone casually placing things. Then someone blocks your perfect move and suddenly this has become a territorial dispute.

Blokus XL is a great family-weekend game because the rules are simple enough for kids to jump into, while the strategy gives older kids and adults plenty to think about. You are constantly trying to find new ways to fit your pieces into shrinking spaces while keeping everyone else from doing the same. There is no complicated story or giant rulebook standing between you and the fun. Just pick a color, start placing pieces, and see who can outmaneuver everyone else.

The XL board also makes this a great choice when you have a bigger group or want a game that feels substantial on the table. It is easy to teach, easy to replay, and has that wonderful "I definitely had a plan" feeling right before somebody ruins it.
