Board Games in Balmville, NY

Balmville sits along the river just north of Newburgh, quiet and mostly residential with a few river-view rentals mixed in. The hamlet takes its name from the old Balmville Tree, a balm-of-Gilead poplar believed to be among the oldest of its kind in the state before it came down in 2015 — the kind of small-town trivia that shows up on a historical marker and nowhere else.

It’s the sort of place where the evening plan is the porch and whatever’s already in the house, which is exactly what a rental fixes without another drive to a store. It’s toward the far edge of our delivery range, so Balmville requests need a bit more notice than towns closer to Plattekill, but we get out there regularly.

Every listing carries the player count, play time, and age straight off the box, and someone in our household has actually played it before it goes on the list — so a family settling in for a weekend on the river knows what they’re getting before it’s on the table. Two landmarks worth knowing if you’re staying a while: the Hudson River waterfront right around the hamlet, and the river overlooks along Route 9W — more on Balmville (opens in new tab) is on Wikipedia.
