Variable Player Powers

A design where each player starts the game with a unique special ability or asymmetric starting condition instead of identical options.

Detailed definition

With variable player powers, nobody starts the game the same way. One player might get an ability that bends a core rule just for them, another might begin with extra resources or a unique restriction — the differences are usually small individually but change how that player approaches the whole game.

It’s a lighter cousin of a fully asymmetric game: the board and win condition are usually shared, but your particular power gives you a reason to lean into a different strategy than the person next to you. It’s a great way to keep a familiar game feeling new on a repeat rental, since picking a different power next time can change the whole night.
