Tuck Box

The small flip-top cardboard box a deck of cards ships in, sized to fit just that deck.

Detailed definition

A tuck box is the small cardboard box — flap tucked into a slot, no lid to lose — that a standalone deck of cards comes packaged in. It’s the same basic shape as a standard pack of playing cards: compact, light, sized to hold one deck and not much else, which is exactly what makes small card games so easy to slip into a bag.

The tradeoff is durability: tuck boxes wear at the corners faster than a rigid game box does, especially once a deck’s been sleeved and the flap’s being asked to close over a thicker stack than it was designed for. For a deck that’s clearly on its way out, a tuck box is often the first part of the game to actually show it, even when every card inside is still in fine shape.
