GLOSSARY · Card Games

Trump

A suit (or specific card) designated to automatically beat every other suit for that hand, round, or game.

Detailed definition

In a trick-taking game, the suit that’s normally supposed to matter is whatever suit got led — but trump breaks that rule. Once a suit is named trump, any card in it outranks every card in every other suit, no matter how low. A trump two can beat a non-trump ace. That’s the whole point: it gives players a way to win a trick they’d otherwise have no shot at.

How trump gets decided varies a lot by game — sometimes it’s set by a bid, sometimes turned up randomly, sometimes chosen by whoever won the last hand. Euchre and spades build entire strategies around guessing or controlling what’s trump before a single card hits the table. It’s one of those rules that sounds fussy explained cold but clicks fast the first time someone plays a two of trump to steal a trick from your ace.
