Tile-Laying

A mechanic where players place tiles turn by turn to build out a shared map or their own personal board.

Detailed definition

Tile-laying games skip the pre-printed board entirely — the board is something you build together, one piece at a time. Each turn you draw or choose a tile and decide where it fits, sometimes matching edges like a puzzle, sometimes just claiming territory. No two games end up looking the same, since the map itself is different every time.

That variety makes tile-laying a comfortable middle ground: there’s a real puzzle to solve, but the physical act of placing a piece keeps it approachable for younger players too. Some titles layer area control scoring on top, so check the listing for how heavy the strategy gets before you decide it’s a light night or a serious one.
