The Meta

The current consensus on the strongest strategies for a game, which can shift as players discover new approaches.

Detailed definition

The meta is shorthand for “the metagame” — not the rules printed in the box, but the evolving, unofficial knowledge of what actually wins. In a game with any real community around it, players compare notes, someone finds a strong opening or a strategy nobody had tried, and it spreads until “everyone” is playing that way. That shared understanding is the meta at any given moment.

It’s never permanent. A meta shifts when someone finds a counter to the dominant strategy, or when an expansion changes the math, which is part of why a genuinely deep game stays interesting long after the rules stop feeling new — its replayability partly comes from the meta itself still moving. If a group you’re playing with keeps saying a certain move is “the meta right now,” that’s worth asking about before you sit down, since it tells you what kind of game you’re actually walking into.
