GLOSSARY · Sensory & Neurodivergent Play
Special Interest
A deep, energizing, long-running interest — common among autistic people — that someone returns to for genuine joy, not just a hobby among many.
Detailed definition
A special interest is a topic or activity someone comes back to again and again, in real depth, because it’s genuinely energizing — not a passing phase, and not something to be talked out of. It’s a well-documented part of a lot of autistic people’s lives, and it’s often a source of real joy, expertise, and connection rather than something that needs managing.
The tabletop hobby is full of people whose special interest is a specific game, mechanic, or genre — someone who can talk your ear off about worker placement or a particular deck archetype for an hour and mean every word of it. If that’s you, or your kid, this hobby tends to have plenty of room for it.
