Social Script
A rehearsed or planned way of navigating a social situation — knowing the moves ahead of time so the interaction takes less improvising in the moment.
Detailed definition
A social script is a known, rehearsed shape for how an interaction is going to go — what to say, when, and in what order — that takes the improvising out of a moment that would otherwise require reading the room in real time. Leaning on one isn’t awkward or fake; it’s a genuinely useful tool for making a social situation easier to enter.
A game’s rules quietly function as one for the whole table. Everyone knows whose turn it is, what a turn looks like, and what’s allowed — which is a big part of why board games can be an easier way to spend time together than open-ended conversation. A session zero does the same job one level up, setting expectations before the first card’s even dealt.
