GLOSSARY · Game Mechanics

Social Deduction Game

A game where players are secretly assigned hidden roles or teams and must talk, bluff, and vote to figure out who's who.

Detailed definition

Social deduction games give a handful of players a secret role or team assignment nobody else can see, then set everyone loose to talk it out. Some players are working toward the group’s shared goal; others are quietly working against it. The entire game happens through conversation — accusing, defending, reading faces — with a vote or elimination usually deciding who was telling the truth.

These live and die by the group’s willingness to bluff and banter, so they’re a great fit for a chatty crowd that already knows each other well, and a rougher fit for a quiet or brand-new group. They also tend to need a decent-sized table to work — check the player count on the listing before you plan a night around one.
