Set Collection

The mechanic of gathering matching or complementary sets of cards or items over the course of a game to score points.

Detailed definition

Set collection is a simple idea that shows up everywhere once you know the name for it: gather a matching or complementary group of things — cards of one suit, a run of colors, one of each type — and get rewarded for completing it. The tension is almost always the same, too: do you keep chasing the set you’ve half-built, or cut your losses and pivot to something more realistic?

It’s one of the most kid-friendly mechanics out there, since “collect the set” is intuitive in a way a lot of strategy concepts aren’t. It also scales up well — the same basic instinct that makes go fish work for a six-year-old is doing real strategic work in heavier games, closely related to melding in rummy-style titles. It’s an easy category to point a mixed-age group toward on the shelf.
