GLOSSARY · General

Sensory Level

A quiet, moderate, or loud rating on every listing, describing what a night with that game actually sounds and feels like.

Detailed definition

Every game on the shelf carries one of three sensory ratings — quiet, moderate, or loud — set by how the game actually plays at a real table, not by what the box promises. A dice game with a plastic popper and a party game that rewards shouting land in different places than a slow strategy title, even when both are technically “family” games.

It isn’t a substitute for the age range or the complexity rating — a game can be simple to learn and still be loud, or heavy to explain and still be dead quiet at the table. Filter by it directly on the shelf, or look for the Quiet Kit tag if you want the shortest path to a lower-sensory pick.
