Rulebook

The booklet that explains how to set up and play a game, sometimes split into a quick-start guide and a full reference.

Detailed definition

The rulebook is the printed booklet that walks you through setup, turn structure, and every rule needed to actually play. Heavier games often split it in two: a short quick-start that gets you through your first game fast, and a fuller reference for the edge cases and exceptions you’ll only hit once you’re a few sessions in.

A rulebook is a decent early clue to a game’s complexity rating — flip through it before you commit to a night and you’ll get a real sense of how much explaining is ahead of you. It’s also one of the easier pieces to misplace between plays, small and paper-thin next to a box full of boards and tokens, which is exactly why it’s on the component list a rental gets checked against.
