Playmat

A fabric or neoprene mat, often printed with a board layout or play zones, that a game gets played directly on top of.

Detailed definition

A playmat is a rollable fabric or neoprene surface, usually printed with the layout a game actually needs — lanes, zones, a grid, sometimes just the game’s art with a smooth surface underneath. Card games use them so shuffling and dealing don’t wear at cards or the table finish; games with a lot of spatial setup use them so everyone’s clear on where things go without redrawing a board from scratch.

It plays a similar role to a player board but at table scale instead of per-person — one shared surface instead of individual trackers. Not every game needs one, and plenty of great ones just use the box lid or a printed board, but for anything meant to travel or get set up fast on any table, a mat that rolls up small is doing real work.
