GLOSSARY · Dice & Randomizers

Percentile Dice

A pair of ten-sided dice, one for the tens digit and one for the ones digit, read together for a result from 1 to 100.

Detailed definition

Percentile dice — often just called “D100” — aren’t a single die at all. They’re two D10s, usually in different colors, rolled together: one is designated the tens digit, the other the ones digit, and the two readings combine into a number from 1 to 100 (with a double-zero read as 100).

The appeal is range — a hundred possible outcomes lets a game build detailed tables for things like random encounters or critical injury charts without every result feeling repetitive. It’s a slower, more deliberate roll than a quick D6 check, so games that use it tend to be the kind that reward sitting with the table a little longer.
