Miniatures
Sculpted plastic or resin figures used as playing pieces instead of simple tokens or flat standees.
Detailed definition
Miniatures — “minis” for short — are three-dimensional sculpted figures used to represent characters, creatures, or vehicles on the board, in place of a flat cutout or a simple wooden token. They range from small unpainted plastic pieces to genuinely detailed sculpts, and for a lot of adventure and dungeon-crawl games, the minis are half the reason people fall for the box in the first place.
They’re also some of the highest-effort components to keep track of, since a single game can ship with dozens of unique sculpts that all need to make it back in one piece. That’s part of why a title heavy on miniatures gets a closer count at check-in than one that’s mostly cardboard — more individually irreplaceable pieces in the box means more riding on the count matching up at return.
