Min-Maxing

Optimizing a strategy or character to be as efficient as possible, sometimes at the expense of theme or fun.

Detailed definition

Min-maxing means minimizing your weaknesses and maximizing your strengths as ruthlessly as the rules allow — building a character, deck, or strategy purely around what scores points or wins fights, with little regard for how it fits the game’s story or spirit. The word originally comes from role-playing games, where a min-maxed character might dump every stat that doesn’t matter mechanically, but it applies just as well to a board gamer who’s found the one opening move that wins nine times out of ten.

It’s not automatically bad — some players genuinely enjoy the puzzle of finding the most efficient path through a system, and a well-designed game can absorb it without breaking. It becomes a problem when it collides with players who came for theme over mechanics and now feel like they’re losing to a spreadsheet instead of playing a game with a friend. Knowing your group’s tolerance for it ahead of time is part of what a good session zero is for.
