Living Card Game

A card game sold in fixed, known expansions instead of random booster packs — same deck-building appeal, no gambling on pulls.

Detailed definition

A living card game gives you the same core appeal as a trading card game — building your own deck out of a larger card pool — but skips the randomness. Every copy of an expansion contains the exact same cards, so what you get is what’s printed on the box, not what luck decides to hand you in a pack.

That one difference changes the whole feel of collecting: you can plan a purchase around a specific card or strategy you actually want, instead of buying packs and hoping. It also tends to make the hobby friendlier to try in short bursts, since you’re not missing pieces of the puzzle by chance. It’s the kind of genre that’s easier to understand at a table than in an explanation, so it’s worth borrowing one to see if the deck-building itch is really what your family’s after.
