Legacy Game

A game that permanently changes as you play it across sessions — stickers get placed, cards get torn up, and none of it resets.

Detailed definition

A legacy game isn’t the same box twice. Decisions you make in one session leave permanent marks on the next — a sticker goes on the board for good, a card gets torn up and removed from the game forever, a rule changes and never changes back. The story builds across many sessions into something that belongs entirely to the group that played it, scars and all.

Because that transformation is genuinely permanent, legacy games generally aren’t a good match for a rental — once a box is played through, it can’t be reset for the next family. If you come across one you’re curious about, it’s more of a “buy your own copy” kind of game than a “borrow it for a weekend” one.
