GLOSSARY · Sensory & Neurodivergent Play
Hyperfocus
A state of deep, sustained absorption in an activity, common in ADHD and autism, where time and everything else outside the task tends to disappear.
Detailed definition
Hyperfocus is the flip side of the attention struggles ADHD and autism usually get talked about for — instead of trouble focusing, it’s an intense, sustained lock-in on one thing, often with everything else (a growling stomach, a text going unanswered, the actual time) fading into the background.
Heavier games are practically built for it. A title with a real learning curve and an engine-building arc, or a legacy game that unfolds across several sessions, gives hyperfocus something substantial to land on instead of fighting against it. Check the complexity rating if you’re specifically hunting for that kind of depth.
