GLOSSARY · Game Mechanics

Hidden Movement

A mechanic where one or more players move in secret and everyone else has to deduce or track where they've gone.

Detailed definition

In a hidden movement game, one player — sometimes a lone fugitive, sometimes a monster stalking a ship — writes their moves down secretly instead of placing a visible piece on the board. Everyone else has to work from clues, sightings, and process of elimination to close in. It flips the usual “everyone sees everything” setup of most board games into something closer to a hunt.

It’s naturally asymmetric: the hidden player usually has a very different job than the searchers, which makes it a fun pick when your group wants roles that feel genuinely different from each other rather than the same experience mirrored around the table. Worth noting on a listing if quiet concentration versus a chattier, deducing crowd matters for your night.
