Game Insert

The molded or custom tray inside a game box that gives every component its own spot.

Detailed definition

A game insert — sometimes called an organizer — is the tray or set of trays molded to fit inside a box, with a specific cutout for every card deck, token stack, and board. A good one turns setup into “lift the lid, everything’s already sorted” instead of a dig through a bag of loose pieces, and it does the same job in reverse at teardown.

Inserts range from a single plastic tray to elaborate multi-level builds some hobbyists design themselves for games that shipped with nothing but a flimsy cardboard divider. They matter more than they sound like they should, because a box that closes cleanly every time is a box where nothing gets crushed or left loose to rattle around — which is exactly what keeps a game returning from a rental in the same shape it left in.
