Family Game Library

A curated collection of games a family or organization keeps on hand to borrow from, rather than owning every title outright.

Detailed definition

A family game library is exactly what it sounds like — a household’s own standing collection, built up over time and organized well enough that anyone in the family can pull something off the shelf without a search. The best ones aren’t huge, they’re curated: a few reliable picks for a quick night, a couple of deeper titles for when there’s real time, and nothing that’s just gathering dust as part of someone’s shelf of shame.

Organizations use the same idea at a larger scale — schools, community programs, and public libraries all run some version of a shared collection people borrow from instead of buy. Renting works well for building your own version at home: you get to actually play a title with your family before deciding whether it earns a permanent spot, instead of guessing from a box description and hoping.
