Exploding Dice

A mechanic where rolling the highest possible number lets you roll again and add the new result on top.

Detailed definition

Exploding dice remove the normal ceiling on a roll. Land the highest number on the die — say a 6 on a D6 — and instead of stopping there, you roll again and add the new number to your total, sometimes chaining into a third or fourth roll if the dice cooperate. The odds of a long chain drop fast, but the possibility never fully goes away.

It’s a small rule that changes how a roll feels: even a modest die can occasionally produce a wildly lucky total, which keeps every roll a little more interesting than a flat, capped result would. If a game on the shelf calls out exploding dice, expect moments where the whole table leans in to watch one roll spiral.
