Discard Pile
The face-up pile where played or unwanted cards land — sometimes dead cards, sometimes still in play.
Detailed definition
Every card game with a hand needs somewhere for cards to go once they’re played or no longer wanted, and that’s the discard pile — usually face-up, usually sitting right next to the draw pile. In some games it’s simply gone: play a card, it’s out of the game for good. In others, it’s very much alive — visible to everyone, and sometimes pullable back into a hand.
That second kind changes how you play. If opponents can see and take from the discard pile, what you get rid of tells them something, and what you choose not to discard can matter as much as what you do. Good hand management often comes down to reading that pile as carefully as your own cards — knowing what’s genuinely gone versus what’s just one good draw away from coming back.
