Dice Pool

Rolling a handful of dice at once and counting how many hit a target, instead of rolling one die and adding a modifier.

Detailed definition

A dice pool is a group of dice — often six, eight, or more of the same type — rolled together in one throw, where what matters isn’t the total but how many individual dice land on or above a target number. Roll a pool of eight D6s needing a 5 or 6 to succeed, and you’re counting hits, not adding up the pips.

It’s a different feeling at the table than a single roll-and-modify system: the size of your pool becomes a resource you build up or spend down over the course of a game, and a good pool can make a risky move feel a lot safer before the dice even hit the table. Games built around this tend to reward planning around your pool size as much as the roll itself.
