GLOSSARY · Dice & Randomizers

Dice Drafting

A mechanic where players take turns picking dice from a shared pool, using each die's number or color as a resource rather than rolling for luck.

Detailed definition

Dice drafting flips the usual job of a die. Instead of rolling it to see what happens, a shared pool of dice gets rolled once, laid out for everyone to see, and then players take turns choosing one — using its number, its color, or both as a resource to build with. The luck happens once, up front; everything after that is a real decision.

That mix is a big part of the appeal: there’s still a roll to react to, but the game is really about reading the table, judging which dice your neighbors want, and deciding whether to grab the best number or deny it to someone else. It tends to land well with players who like a touch of randomness without wanting the whole outcome left to chance — a solid pick if you enjoyed the tension in a drafting game before.
