Deck-Building

A game where you start with a weak, uniform deck and spend the game buying or adding cards to build it into something stronger.

Detailed definition

Deck-building as a genre starts everyone in the same weak spot — usually a small stack of basic, forgettable cards — and turns the game into a race to make your deck better than it began. Each turn you play what you’ve got, use it to acquire new cards from a shared pool, and shuffle those in. Slowly, your pile of cards stops feeling random and starts feeling like a plan.

It’s a different animal from a trading card game: there’s no collection to own or bring home, no packs, no card advantage carried between games. Everyone builds from scratch, every single time, out of cards supplied by the box itself. That’s a big part of why it’s an easy genre to rent rather than buy — you get the full arc of building something from nothing in one sitting, then hand the box back.
