GLOSSARY · Dice & Randomizers

D8

An eight-sided die shaped like two pyramids glued base to base, landing on a flat triangular face like most other dice.

Detailed definition

The D8 is an octahedron — eight triangular faces, numbered 1 through 8, that lands flat like a normal die instead of point-up like its D4 cousin. It sits comfortably in the middle of the polyhedral dice set, used wherever a game wants more range than a D6 but doesn’t need the full spread of a D12 or D20.

You’ll mostly meet the D8 in RPG-style damage rolls or as one option in a mixed set of dice used for different effects in the same game. It’s rarely the star of the show, but it’s a reliable sign a title leans toward the tactical, numbers-forward end of the shelf rather than a quick family game.
