D6

The standard six-sided die everyone already knows from Monopoly and Yahtzee, and the most common die in tabletop gaming by far.

Detailed definition

The D6 is the cube-shaped die most people picture the moment someone says “roll the dice.” It’s the workhorse of the hobby — cheap to make, easy to read, and familiar enough that a game can hand you a fistful without slowing anyone down to explain what they are.

Plenty of games use a single D6 for movement or a quick check, but just as many lean on a dice pool of six or eight at once, counting how many land on a target number instead of just adding up the total. If you want a night that’s dice-heavy without needing a rulebook detour to explain the dice themselves, D6-based games on the shelf are usually the easiest entry point.
