D4
A four-sided die shaped like a tiny pyramid, usually read from whichever number sits at the top point rather than a flat face.
Detailed definition
The D4 is the odd one out in a polyhedral dice set — instead of landing on a flat face like every other die, it’s a tetrahedron that lands point-up, and you read the number printed around the base of whichever corner is pointing at the ceiling. It’s also the die most likely to end up wedged in a bare foot, so most tables learn to respect it fast.
You’ll see D4s called for in small amounts — a single die for a dagger’s damage, a couple for a spell effect — rather than rolled by the handful. If a listing mentions a D4 at all, it’s usually a lighter RPG-adjacent title or something using dice notation like “1d4” for a minor outcome.
Curious what game uses that weird pyramid die?
