GLOSSARY · Dice & Randomizers

Critical Hit & Critical Fail

Rolling the best or worst possible result on a die — usually the max or the minimum — which triggers an extra-good or extra-bad outcome.

Detailed definition

A critical hit is landing the best possible number on the die — most famously a natural 20 on a D20 — and having the game reward it with something bigger than a normal success: extra damage, an automatic win, a bonus effect. A critical fail is the mirror image, the worst possible roll, usually the die’s lowest number, triggering a stumble, a fumble, or something worse than an ordinary miss.

These moments tend to be the ones people actually remember from a game night, because they land outside the normal range of outcomes and the table notices. Not every game uses them — plenty stick to a plain pass/fail line — but if a listing mentions crits or fumbles, expect a night with a little more swing in it.
