GLOSSARY · Game Mechanics

Cooperative Game

A game where everyone plays on the same team against the game itself, winning or losing together.

Detailed definition

In a cooperative game, there’s no opponent at the table — the game itself is the opponent. Everyone’s working from the same side, pooling information and planning moves together to beat a shared challenge, whether that’s an outbreak spreading across a board or a storm closing in on a crew. You win together or you lose together; there’s no individual scoreboard at the end.

That shared stake makes cooperative games a genuinely good pick for families or mixed-skill groups, since a stronger player can help a newer one without it feeling like they’re just winning for them. Many lean on variable player powers too, giving each person a distinct job in the team’s plan rather than identical options.
