Campaign Game

A series of connected sessions that build on each other from one game night to the next, without the permanent changes of a legacy game.

Detailed definition

Campaign games string several sessions together into one ongoing story — your characters might level up, your map might expand, decisions from last time might open a new path this time. It’s the middle ground between a self-contained one-off and a legacy game: there’s real continuity from session to session, but nothing about the physical components is permanently destroyed to get there.

That makes campaign games a genuinely good rental fit as long as the timing works out — the components reset cleanly for the next family once you’re done, but you’ll want to plan around a rental window that gives your group enough sessions to actually see the story through, not just the first chapter.
