GLOSSARY · Card Games

Bluffing Game

A game where winning depends on convincingly misrepresenting your hand, your intentions, or what you actually know.

Detailed definition

In a bluffing game, the cards in your hand are only half the information at the table — the other half is what everyone believes about your cards, and that belief is something you can shape on purpose. Claiming a stronger hand than you’re holding, staying calm when you should be panicking, betting like you’ve got nothing to lose: all of it is part of legitimate play, not cheating.

Poker’s the obvious example, but plenty of family and party games lean on the same nerve — the real skill isn’t the cards, it’s reading a table full of people and being read right back. It tends to reward the same kids who love a good poker face over a strategy title, and it’s one of the few genres where a chatty, expressive group is actually an advantage during table talk, not a distraction from the game.
