Area Control
A scoring style based on holding more presence in a region of the board than anyone else, rather than collecting points directly.
Detailed definition
Area control games score you on territory, not tallies. You’re placing pieces, armies, or influence into specific zones on the board, and at scoring time it’s whoever has the most there — not the biggest pile of points banked elsewhere — that wins that region. That means your opponents’ moves matter just as much as yours; a region you thought was locked up can flip in a single turn.
It tends to run more confrontational than a typical worker placement game, since you’re directly contesting the same spaces your friends want. Great for a table that likes a bit of friendly rivalry, less great for a night where everyone’s tired and just wants to build quietly in their own corner.
