GLOSSARY · Game Mechanics

American-Style Game

A theme-forward design tradition built on direct conflict and dice or cards driving the outcome, with story taking priority over abstraction.

Detailed definition

Where a euro game tends to smooth conflict into indirect competition, American-style games lean straight into it — attacking, blocking, and sometimes knocking a player out entirely before the game’s over for everyone else. Theme drives the design: you’re not moving an abstract cube, you’re leading an army or building an empire, and the rules usually put that story front and center over strategic elegance.

Dice and cards carry a lot more of the outcome here than in a euro, which means a good roll can matter as much as a good plan — some players love that swing, others find it frustrating. If your table wants drama, direct rivalry, and a strong theme over a tight optimization puzzle, this is the flavor to look for.
